Assembly

This week the children have been thinking about what they want to share in their assembly next week. They have been busy practising a dance and using the microphone to say their words clearly. The children are doing really well and are looking forward to showing off their learning.

The children got to spend a morning in their new classes on Thursday and loved it. They are very excited to be moving up.

The afternoon Nursery enjoyed playing board games on Thursday, They were able to take turns and thought about who had the most and who would be the winner.

Afternoon Nursery also had a visit from Les the Beekeeper on Friday. he has been helping Sammy's family. We saw a real hive and touched some honeycomb and bees wax. Les gave us some honeycomb to put on our discovery table so that Morning Nursery can see it too.

Next week is our final week in Nursery before we break up for the summer. Morning Nursery Sharing Assembly is on Wednesday at 9.15 and Afternoon Nursery is at 2.45.

Holidays

This week we have been learning about holidays and reading holiday related stories.

In Maths we had to use our problem solving skills and find as many ways as possible to decorate a sandcastle using 6 shells. We were very impressed that some of the children wanted to record their findings in different ways by drawing and writing numbers.

The children have loved exploring floating and sinking in the Discovery Area. They have had some great theories about why some things float for example because of gravity, they do or don't have holes, they are big or small or hard or soft. Take a look in our Science Investigation book for more comments and photos.

All the children had ice lollies on Friday because it was so hot.

The children have been really enjoying the outside play because the weather had been so nice. They have enjoyed building sandcastles in the sandpit. They have used the den building area to create pathways and dens in the trees.

In P.E. the children have started learning a dance to the 'Ugly Bug Ball.' The children enjoyed finding different ways of moving to be different bugs and copying dance moves from Mrs Chadwick and Mrs Keith.

Next week we will be continuing to think about holidays and moving to our new classes and schools.

On Monday please come along to Open Evening from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. You will have an opportunity to look at the wonderful things your child has been doing in Nursery this year and go and look around the other classes in the school.

On Thursday it is our transition morning when the children will spend some time in their new Reception classes.

On Wednesday 19th July the children will have their final sharing assembly. The morning performance is at 9.05 and the afternoon performance is at 2.45.

Aeroplanes

It was lovely to come into Nursery this week and find butterflies in the butterfly net. The children enjoyed watching them feed from the oranges and fly around the net. On Friday we released the butterflies as it was sunny. The first few were desperate to fly away. In the afternoon they were more reluctant so the children got to pass around an orange with them on and observe them feeding before they flew away.

We went to Woodlands on Monday and enjoyed looking for the different bugs and insects. We found slugs, ants, spiders, flies, centipedes and woodlice. We used little pots to observe them through the magnifying glass. We also did a scavenger hunt looking for different shaped leaves, long and short sticks, stones, something bumpy and something smooth.

We planted some grass seeds and thought about what they would need to help them grow. After putting some compost in the pot we added the seeds and watered them. We will be bringing them home next week, once the grass has started growing.

We were lucky to have a real pilot come into Nursery and talk about his job and the roles of other members of staff. The children absolutely loved Mr Irwin's visit and it helped to improve the quality of the role play which has been an airport this week. The children are all taking on a whole range of roles in the role play.

The Morning Nursery made a plane out a huge box on Friday. We've had a wide variety of planes made out of the large construction and they've included jet engines, windows and the cockpit.

Next week our theme is 'Holidays.'

Our song of the week is Five Little Sandcastles.

Caterpillars

We have had a lovely week in Nursery. The children were very pleased to see that the caterpillars have been growing and eating lots over the weekend. We looked really carefully at the caterpillars and drew a picture of what they look like now and some of us attempted some writing about them. As a class we have continued writing our caterpillar diary. We noticed they were bigger, some were spiky and some had crawled to the top of the pot.

We read 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle last week and this week we re-told the story and made up some new objects for the caterpillar to eat. Lots of children thought about their favourite food and the caterpillar ate spaghetti, pizza and sweets.

We have been practising for Sports Day next week. The children have been trying really hard to balance the bean-bags on their heads and run in and out of the cones. The children worked really well as a team. Sports Day is on Friday 23rd June from 9.10 for the morning and afternoon children.

Next week in phonics we will be continuing to practise all of the sounds we have learnt this year. We will also be rhyming and splitting words up into individual sounds and having a go at putting them back together.

We will be making some jewellery for our fashion show from recycled materials. Please send in some small pieces of recycled objects for our junk modelling.

Picnics

What a week!. We have had a very busy week in Nursery. In P.E. we carried on practising our Teddy Bear's Picnic May Dance. The children are following really well, so hopefully our performance for you next week will make you proud.

Theo and Ola's favourite part of the week this week was taking photographs of the Teddy Bears. The children did well trying to get the Teddy Bear's face in the picture and pushing down hard on the button. We are hoping to use them for our David Hockney work next week.

We were very impressed with the children's drawing and painting skills this week. We challenged the children to draw and then paint with watercolours some Winnie-the Pooh characters. Nehan looked really carefully at Winnie-the-Pooh to draw the shapes and Lydia added Eeyore's bow for detail on her picture.

The children had a great time at Aldenham Country Park, despite the wet weather. They enjoyed finding the Winnie-the-Pooh characters' houses and running through the buttercups in 100 Aker Wood. We saw lots of animals at the farm including cows, rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep, donkeys and horses. We all had a photo taken on the tractor. At lunchtime Winnie-the-Pooh came to see us and some of us enjoyed giving him a big hug. We all enjoyed jumping in the muddy puddles and running throught the mud. Thank you to all the parents who helped and braved the wet weather.

On Friday we made sandwiches for our picnic. We could put jam or honey in and then cut the sandwiches into different shapes. The weather wasn't on our side so we used Treetops and had an indoor picnic with the bears.

Next week our sound of the week is 'v' and we will be learning some rhymes about bears.

Afternoon Nursery will be performing the May Dance at the Community Tea on Thursday afternoon.
Morning Nursery will be performing at the May King and Queen Celebrations on Friday morning.
If your child is in Treetops on a Thursday afternoon, they will also be performing at the Community Tea.

Winnie-the-Pooh

We have had an exciting week this week showing some of our grown-ups how we learn in Nursery. We hope that work shadowing was a valuable experience for you if you were able to take part. We were pleased to see all the grown-ups joining in with singing, playing and dancing with their children.

This week we read the story 'Winnie-the-Pooh and the Troublesome Bees.' We followed Pooh through the story and were introduced to the other characters in the books. We used this to help us with our Maths learning. We counted the bees carefully and separated them in different ways.

We followed a map of the outdoor area to find 'Winnie-the-Pooh.' The children were able to use lots of position language and could talk about where to go in the outside area.

We looked at a map of 100 Acre Wood in preparation for our trip to Aldenham Country Park next week. The children were able to spot the different characters we had seen in our Winnie-the-Pooh story.

Next week we will be continuing to read about Winnie-the-Pooh and our trip to Aldenham Country Park is on Wednesday next week. We will be painting characters from the Winnie-the-Pooh stories and making our own picnics.

Our sound of the week is 'j' and we will be reading the rhyme 'Happiness' by A. A. Milne.

Sunday 7 May 2017

We're Going on a Bear Hunt ...again

The children have continued to enjoy 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and this week we went on a Bear Hunt, repeating the phrases and words from the story in the outdoor area. The children could remember the words and enjoyed the repeated phrases as they walked through the swishy swashy grass. Their favourite part was running away from the bear back through the different settings.

We also explored the woodwork area outside and learnt how to use the tools carefully and safely.

The children were very excited to have a look at the chicks in the classroom. We got them out and let them run on the carpet and some of us were brave enough to hold them.

The children enjoyed singing the song 'There were 10 in the bed' during our maths sessions. The children drew 10 teddies on their whiteboards and rubbed one out every time one fell out of bed.

Next week we be finding out about Winnie-the-Pooh and reading maps.

Our sound of the week is 'l' and we will be learning a song about Winnie-the-Pooh.

Monday 1 May 2017

We're Going on a Bear Hunt

This week we have enjoyed reading the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and joining in with the repetitive phrases. Joy and Jasmine used some lovely expression when joining in. The children had a go at drawing and writing about their favourite parts in the story.

In Maths we thought about positional language and went on our own hunt in the playground, under the tunnel, over the bridge and next to the sandpit.

In P.E. we started practising for our May Dance. The children listened to two different types of music and responded very well to the different speeds. The children have obviously been practising their skipping.

The children have really enjoyed looking at the chicks this week and have been counting how many they can see. We are hoping that they might be able to visit us in Nursery next week.

The children have been getting used to their new groups and have been painting their own Bears and Bees. They have looked very carefully at the pictures and colours.

Next week we will be continuing to read 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and will be using the woodwork area outside.

Our sound of the week is 'l'.

We will be putting out the sign up sheets for work shadowing which is taking place from 9th to 12th May. This is when you can join your child in Nursery and shadow everything they do; from sitting on the carpet, joining in with singing and taking part in learning through play.

Saturday 22 April 2017

Out and About

The children have settled back well after Easter and we have been excited about getting some new friends join us in the afternoon.

It was lovely to see so many great entries for the Easter Challenge Cress Heads. Well done George in Morning Nursery and Teddy in Afternoon Nursery, our Nursery winners.

The children had a great day for the Fun Run Sporty day. They enjoyed having a go on the obstacle course which had been set up on the playground for them. The morning children had a go at a running race on the field too. The afternoon children ran around the playground in laps as the Juniors were on the field, and they loved it.

All children have had some time on the activity playground this week and have shown confidence in climbing and balancing on it.

In Phonics we had a go at listening to sounds in the outside area. It was lovely to be in the sunshine and we identified lots of different sounds we could hear.

We practised the rhyme Hickety Pickety My Red Hen every day and the children got really good at singing it and getting the rhythm.

Treetops shared a book about growing a sunflower and as a result have planted their own seeds to see if they can get them to grow. We’ll be watching them on our Discovery table.

Next week we will be reading ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’

Our sound of the week is ‘f’.
Our Nusery Trip is on Wednesday 17th May. We will be needing lots of helpers, so if you are able to help please let us know by signing up on the sheet outside Nursery or sending us an email.

Kaleidoscope of People

This week in Nursery we have been looking at the similarities and differences between ourselves and others. We sorted pictures of children looking at their eye, skin and hair colour and talked about where we would put ourselves. Sammy told us that his brother's hair is different to his and his parent's hair. This linked in well with our song this week, 'What colour are your eyes?'

We made Mother's Day card this week by sticking cake cases to make a flower shape. We hope you liked them.

In  Maths we looked at different coins and their shapes. We tried to 'buy' toys by matching the number of pennies with the numbers on the labels.

In phonics next week we will be looking at all the sounds we have learnt so far ' s a t p i n m g o d c k ck u r h'

Our theme of the week is Easter and we will be singing lots of Easter rhymes.

Please remember term finishes at 1.30 on Friday.

Colours Around Us

This week we have been learning about Colours Around Us.

In P.E. we made up a Rainbow dance, pretending to be the sun, then the rain and used coloured scarves to create the Rainbow. We will be continuing this next week.

We had lots of fun making our 'Rainbow Pizzas.' We had to chop up the different coloured peppers, red onion and tomatoes very carefully, holding our knives safely. We spread tomato puree onto the wraps, decorated it with the vegetables in a rainbow pattern and sprinkled cheese on the top. Miles predicted that the pizza would go 'crispy' in the oven and the 'cheese will melt.' We hope they enjoyed eating them.

We explored some remote control toys this week and worked out how to make them move and how to get them to make a noise.

We have been reading poems this week about colours and made up our own.

Pink is in the rainbow and in pink pigs, (Sienna)
Red can be a Power Ranger and yummy strawberries, (Benji)
Green is beans, trees and jumping frogs, (Joy)
Yellow is Sammy's cup and my Mummy's hair, (Nia)

Pink is piglets and the Nursery cameras. (Maddison)

Next week our sound of the week is 'h'.

Animal Patterns

We have had a lovely week learning all about different animals and their patterns.

The children had a go at predicting which animals would be inside the boxes from the patterns on the front. Quite a lot of the children were unsure what wild animals would feel like. They talked about whether a tortoise shell would be hard or soft and how a snake's skin would feel. They are beginning to get the idea of camouflage.

The chn have enjoyed the chameleon themed stories this week and have had a go at predicting what they think might happen at the end of the stories. We had fun trying to make our own mixed up animals, like in the Mixed Up Chameleon story.

We listened to  'Elephant' by Saint Saens and there were some really good ideas about which animal it could be about. Some suggestions were; a whale, because it sounds quite big and scary, a tiger roaring and an octopus in deep water.  The chn had a go at making their own music about animals and thought carefully about which instrument to choose.

At Woodlands we collected leaves and other natural materials to make snake patterns along the ground. We thought hard about which objects could be used for the different parts. We also had a go at making spider web patterns between the trees using wool. We enjoyed winding the wool around the branches and joining it to other branches to make different patterns.

We have had a lovely time playing outside in the milder weather. The chn have made some great dens and have got out of breath running up and down the hill and climbing up the climbing wall. The Vet role play has proved very popular too with lots of people bringing their sick animals to be treated.

Next week our sound of the week is 'r'.

Our song of the week is 'I can sing a Rainbow'.

The Gingerbread Man

The children have had a lovely Book Week, telling us all about their favourite book characters and painting them for their character hats on World Book Day. Thank you for sharing with us your favourite stories too.

Our book this week has been the Gingerbread Man and we have been reading it every day. In P.E. we pretended to be the Gingerbread Man and ran as fast as we could whilst avoiding other people and the obstacles in the hall.

In Maths we have been using out problem solving skills and had to think of ways to share the buttons between the Gingerbread Men so that they all had the same number. Some of us were very sure the Gingerbread Men should only have 3 buttons each. We had to do very careful counting. We worked very well with the other children in our group, discussing our ideas and helping each other.

On Thursday we wrote our own endings to the Gingerbread Man. We thought you might like to read them.

PM Nursery
When the Gingerbread Man met the fox he said “I don’t want your help.” He ran as fast as he could over the bridge. The fox was still chasing him so he climbed up a tree where he met a bird. The Gingerbread Man sat on the bird and the bird flew away for safety.

 AM Swirls.
The Fox met the Gingerbread Man at the river. The Gingerbread Man was feeling very hungry after so much running. He started to lick his lips. He ran to the fox and said, “I’ve got a sister you might like to eat. She lives in a cave over here.” The fox looked in the cave. When his back was turned the Gingerbread Man gobbled him up.

 AM Zig-Zags.

The Gingerbread Man got to the river. He might fall in. Gingerbread Man thinks, “Should he jump?” No. He might fall in the river. He could fly on a bird or an aeroplane or an owl or a rocket or a helicopter with a harness or a hot air balloon. He could cross the other way. The Gingerbread Man decided to go along the path and nobody caught him.

The chn really enjoyed their Gingerbread Men for snack and everybody was prepared to try them! We looked at a piece of real ginger and smelt it.
Afternoon Nursery wore their hats to celebration assembly and could tell Mrs McLellan and the whole school what the Gingerbread Man says in the story.  Morning Nursery had fun in the rain outside wearing their wellies and wet suits. They danced to 'Raindrops keep falling on my head.'

Next week we will be learning about 'Animal Patterns.'

Our Sound of the Week is u.

There will be no P.E. on Monday as we will be going to Woodlands on Wednesday.

Saturday 25 February 2017

William Morris

This week the children have been learning about our whole school artist, William Morris. We looked at some of his prints and the children described what they could see. There were a lot of flowers and leaves.

We looked at the 'Larkspur' print and the children used potatoes, cotton buds and leaves to print their own pictures based on this pattern. The children showed great concentration.

The children have also been showing us how well they are doing in their Maths. They are getting much better at describing shapes now and we have even started to look at some 3D shapes. The children have talked about a cylinder and cone.

This week we continued to look at stories set under the sea as we had been reading the Rainbow Fish. They really enjoyed the story of Barry the Fish with Fingers.

The school role play has been very popular. The children have been pretending to be the different teachers in Nursery which had been very interesting. They've been following the timetable and doing snack, phonics and story time.

Next week is Book Week and we will be focusing on the story 'The Gingerbread Man'. The children can bring in their favourite stories to share.

Our sound of the week is 'e'.

Sunday 5 February 2017

Chinese New Year

This week the children have enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year and know that red is a lucky colour. They explored Chinese objects and talked about when they have celebrated a special occasion.

In Maths we have been carefully counting the animals and arranging them in different ways.
We had some great conversation about numbers on NSPCC Number Day. We think Henry wore the most numbers in the school with his pi t-shirt! We talked about  big numbers and what they would ask for if they could have any amount of money- lots of children thought £10 was a lot of money. Grace thought we could just ask for £1 and give the other money to children that need it.

We read the story of the Great Race and Mrs Wilson came and talked to us about living in China. She taught us how to count to 5 in Chinese.

In P.E. we watched a clip of a dragon dance and worked together to create our own dancing dragon. The children did very well moving up and down and shaking their heads to the music.

Next week we will be reading the story 'Rainbow Fish.'

Our rhyme of the week is Pat a Cake.

Our sound of the week is 'c'.

Sunday 29 January 2017

Peacocks

This week we have been looking at different colours and have had a go at mixing colours. Henry noticed that the tail of a Peacock looks like a Kaleidoscope so we tried to make our own Peacock feathers. We coloured patterns using red, blue and yellow onto a coffee filter and then watched what happened when they went in the water. We enjoyed watching the colours spread and were amazed when purple and green colours appeared too. Even the water changed colour!!

We visited St. Luke's sensory room and enjoyed looking at the different pictures change on the walls when we moved the sticks over the lights. There were textured spots which felt funny on our feet when we walked on them. Some of the pictures on the floor changed when we touched them, showing different patterns.

In Maths we wanted to find out what everyone's favourite colour was. We used the unifix cubes and built towers of different colours. Blue seemed to be Nursery's favourite colour.

Some of the children in Treetops made their own sensory bottles using oil, water and food colouring. They added sequins and beads and found out whether they floated or sunk.

Next week our sound of the week is 'o'.

We are going to be finding out about Chinese New Year.

Sunday 22 January 2017

Snowflakes

This week the children have been learning about snowflakes.

In Maths we counted the points on a snowflake and found that all of them had 6 points. We also found out that no two snowflakes are the same. The children have been getting the idea of repeating patterns making them with the bead strings and pegs and drawing them with coloured pens.

This week we did an experiment to try and make snow. The children loved seeing what would happen when we mixed the bicarbonate of soda and the shaving foam to make snow and described how it looked -'like marshmallow and jelly' and felt - 'sticky and squidgy'.

We used our fine motor skills to thread some snowflake shapes.

Morning Nursery went to Celebration Assembly and sat and listened really well. Mrs Byrne came to read a story to morning Nursery  as Adam asked her to come.

We've had a lot of fun learning about snow, singing the snowflake song, painting and printing snowflakes and cutting them out. We were also very interested in a non-fiction book about snow. Afternoon Nursery liked finding about animals camouflaged by the snow.

Next week we are going to be learning about colour and pattern. On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning we are going to St. Luke's sensory room. If anyone can help on this trip please let a member of staff know if you haven't already done so.

Next week our sound of the week is 'g'.

We will be learning a song about a Peacock.

Sunday 15 January 2017

Kaleidoscope

Welcome back and Happy New Year. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break.

The children have had a settled week in Nursery in their new groups, Zig-Zags and Swirls and have come up with lots of ideas on what they want to learn about our new topic Kaleidoscope.

This week we have been drawing and writing about our Christmas Holidays and drawing self-portraits. We have been very impressed with how the children's pencil grips have improved.

The children have been fascinated by the torches and reflective objects, making rainbows in the glass balls. They were surprised by the coloured water in the water tray (we made it orange) and have been singing 'I can sing a rainbow' while they play.

We read 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear' and 'Polar Bear, Polar Bear' this week and the children did really well in making up their own version of the stories.  Some of our children have taken turns in helping to read the story to the group.

There was great excitement about the snow and the afternoon children managed to play with the little bit that was left on Friday.

They were very good at our 'guessing the word' game in Phonics, where they had to guess the word we were sounding out to them. They also did well at saying which colour should come next in our patterns and are keen to have a go at making their own now.

Next week we will be learning about 'Snowflakes'.

Our rhyme of the week is Little Snowflake (sung to the tune Frere Jacques) and our sound of the week is 'd'.
