Christmas

We have had a lovely couple of weeks in Nursery. We were very proud of how the children performed in their Sharing Assembly. They all spoke so confidently and sang the songs beautifully. We hope that you enjoyed it.

Morning Nursery have been lucky enough to go into the staff room to have some Christmas stories read to them. One of the stories was read by Mrs McCormick. While we were in the staff room this week we had a very special visitor. Father Christmas came to see us, The children were very excited and sang their Father Christmas song to him.

Afternoon Nursery were lucky to have him come and visit in the Nursery. The children loved seeing him.

Treetops Club got to have a special Christmas lunch in Treetops. They listened to Christmas songs and wore the party hats they had made.

All the children have been loving the snow in the water tray and both Morning and Afternoon Nursery have been building towers and structures from 3D shapes.

We had a Maths problem solving week this week and the children had to find different objects to fill the different sized bags. We talked about which bags were the biggest and which they thought would hold more. We found out that it depended on the size of the object we put in the bags.  We have also been practising our positional language, moving Santa and his reindeer into different places in the house.

If you have not yet applied for a Reception place, please get your applications in. The deadline is 15th January.

We are finding that our coat hooks are getting rather full as some children have backpacks on their pegs. If your child does need to have a bag for spare clothes, please can you put the items in a drawstring bag which takes up less room and allows coats to fit on the pegs properly.

We are looking forward to the Christmas party on Monday. Please send your child in school uniform as they have made hats to wear. Please remember term finishes on Tuesday, and Afternoon Nursery and the children who attend Treetops Club need to be picked up at 1.30.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Christmas Sharing

Christmas started in Nursery this week with the beginning of advent and starting to practise for our sharing assembly. We have been reading the Nativity story and some of the children were very surprised that Mary and Joseph couldn't go in a car to Bethlehem and stay in a hotel!!

In P.E. we danced to 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' using the scarves to make big movements with our arms.

We have been very busy learning all the songs for our assembly and deciding what parts we want to do.

We have been thinking about what we would like for Christmas and started writing our own Christmas lists.

We all got to choose a decoration to hang on the Christmas tree in the hall today which was really special. It looked really beautiful with the lights on it too.

We've been fascinated by the ice outside this week. Some of us thought it was glass so we put water in the freezer to see what happens to it. We've learned that it smashes like glass if we throw it on the ground.

Please remember on Wednesday 7th December it is the Nursery Sharing Assembly.

Our sound of the week next week is 'n'.

Sunday 27 November 2016

Woodlands

We have had a busy week in Nursery this week. On Monday the Morning Nursery went to Woodlands in the wet weather and looked for signs of footprints. Nathaniel thought he even saw the Gruffalo's footprints. We really enjoyed jumping up and down in the muddy puddles. We were also looking for textured objects so that we could print them in a clay tile. Some of the leaves made some lovely patterns.

The Afternoon Nursery managed to go into our outdoor area, despite the pouring rain. They collected objects to print into the clay tiles inside. The holly leaves made a pretty shape.

We spent the week learning how to share and take turns when playing a game. We had to wait our turn and remember not to shout out when it was someone else's turn.

We made some Christmas Tree decorations to sell at the Christmas Fair, using lolly sticks and sparkly sequins and glitter. We had to concentrate to wrap a pipe cleaner around the stick to make it look like tinsel. If you didn't manage to get to the Christmas Fair you can bring £1 to the classroom and they will be on sale next week.

Next week our sound of the week is 'i'. We will be starting to learn a number of Christmas songs ready for our sharing assembly on 7th December.

Sunday 20 November 2016

Cinderella

This week we have been reading the story 'Cinderella' and have been talking about the characters, events and settings in the story. This linked in very well with 'Kindness Week' as most of us thought that the Ugly Sisters were being very unkind to Cinderella. We thought that the Fairy Godmother was kind though because she gave Cinderella a lovely dress to wear.

We have been busy creating Pumpkin Carriage artwork and have been practising our scissor skills cutting around a pumpkin shape. We have also been exploring what happens when we mix different coloured paints together.

The children liked wearing spots and stripes for Children in Need on Friday and enjoyed bringing in their teddies with eye patches.

We've been describing and naming simple shapes and enjoyed listening to 'Shape Song 2' on You Tube. We've also been spotting shapes in pictures. The ice chunks we put outside have prompted a lot of discussion and questions such as 'what happens if we put the ice in water?'

Next week our sound of the week is 't' and the rhyme of the week is The Grand Old Duke of York.

On Monday we will be going to Woodlands so please remember wellies and waterproof suits if your child does not already have them in school.

Sunday 13 November 2016

Nursery Rhyme Week

We have got really good at singing our Nursery Rhymes this week and have enjoyed changing the words in some of them.

We used instruments to accompany Dr Foster and showed that we were really good at playing loud and soft, fast and slow.

In P.E. we had a go at throwing and catching the balls to partners. We had to remember to watch the ball and then pull it into us when we had caught it.

We have explored lots of different sizes and shapes of magnet this week. We found that some things stick to them and some don't. Some of us noticed that they push and pull each other too. We also enjoyed using torches to help us look in dark places and to explore the effect of light on prisms and mirrors.

On Friday Morning Nursery went to see Maple Class do their Sharing Assembly. We showed excellent listening skills. At 11am we stayed silent for a whole minute while we thought about the soldiers from long ago. Afternoon Nursery went to the Celebration Assembly and also did fantastic listening. We talked about Poppy day too and listened to some special music called 'The Last Post'.

Next week we will be reading Cinderella and talking about the characters and events in the story.

Our sound of the week is 'p' and our rhyme of the week is Hickory Dickory Dock.

We have moved our Woodlands session to Monday 21st November. Please let us know if you are able to help.

Sunday 6 November 2016

Each Peach Pear Plum

The children have all come back into Nursery after the half term break ready for learning.

This week we have been revisiting Each Peach Pear Plum and the children drew pictures of their favourite characters and told us why they liked them.

We have also been practising our mouse skills this week which most of us found very tricky. We had to click on objects and move the mouse to move the objects. This was helping us to develop our fine motor control. If you would like to practise a bit more at home we were making 'Scary Spuds' from the Crickweb website. http://www.crickweb.co.uk/Early-Years.html

We've done well at recognising and saying our sound of the week and all particularly enjoyed making some 'silly soup' using objects beginning with 's'.

We've talked about Bonfire Night and how to keep safe around fireworks.

We've found a new way of keeping the sand out of our shoes in the sandpit by wearing disposable covers over them. This is making it much quicker to get ready!

Rev Tim came to visit the Afternoon Nursery on Friday so he can get to know us a bit and find out how we learn. We really enjoyed telling him about what we like doing at Nursery. Afternoon Nursery also went to celebration assembly this week.

The children enjoyed our first book browsing session with the parents. On a Wednesday at drop off you are welcome to come in with your child and share a book with them and if your child would like to take one home we will sign it out for them.

Next week is 'Nursery Rhyme Week.' We will be singing Incy Wincy Spider, Doctor Foster, Two Little Dickie Birds and Baa Baa Black Sheep.

The sound of the week is 'a'. Please feel free to bring in any objects for our sound table.

Sunday 23 October 2016

Russia

All the children really loved our focus on Russia for Cultural Week. In P.E. we listened to 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' and responded in our own way to the music. Some of us had very gentle arms and careful tip-toes.

For special snack we had beetroot and we were very proud of the way nearly all of the children were prepared to taste it.

The children worked really hard to create their models of Saint Basil's Cathedral, learning how to use the tape dispenser and glue spreaders to fix pieces together.  Lydia recognised the picture of Saint Basil's Cathedral and told us that it is found in Red Square. She had picked up this knowledge from an episode of 'Go Jetters' so we all watched it to find out more about Russia.

We saw some fantastic work in Maths too with the children ordering the Russian dolls according to size and stacking them in and out of each other.

We all went over to the 'Treetops' classroom and used the djembe drums to play along to the Russian song 'Kalinka'. The children enjoyed playing fast and slow according to the music. We loved some of the attempts at Cossack dancing we saw during Learning Through Play.

On Thursday morning the children experienced their first fire drill and the morning Nursery coped really well, walking calmly and sensibly to the playground and then back.

After half term the sound of the week will be 's'. The number of the week is '4'. The rhyme of the week is 'Old Mother Hubbard.'
We hope you all have a lovely half term.

Tuesday 18 October 2016

Goldilocks

We have had another busy week in Nursery.
In P.E. we got the big parachute out and had fun pretending it was a Merry-Go-Round. We moved around the circle in different ways. We also had to run under the parachute and swap places with someone who had the same colour t-shirt.
We decorated biscuits for the Three Bears for our Maths activity. We had to do careful counting of the sultanas to put on our biscuits by saying the number names in order and touching each one as we said the number name. Sophia had 11 raisins on her biscuit so the group decided it must be for Daddy Bear!
The morning children loved seeing the Year 2 assembly on Friday morning. They sat and listened brilliantly.
The afternoon children had Miles' brother from Year 2 come and read them a story he had written about Kipper complete with illustrations. They loved it!
We all had the balls out in Learning through Play to practice our catching, throwing and kicking skills.
We talked about keeping safe on the Internet and liked seeing some photos of us on the website.
We were very good at rolling and squeezing the Playdough. Some of us managed to make thumb pots. Mary-Jane kindly brought in a Peppa Pig Playdough set for us to use which lots of us have enjoyed playing.

Next week is cultural week and we will be learning about Russia.

Our rhyme of the week will be Pat-a-Cake.

Sunday 9 October 2016

Harvest and Woodlands

The children did a lovely performance of 'Oats and Beans' in their assemblies this week. They remembered the words and the actions to the song.

The children loved their first Woodlands visit and found lots of signs of Autumn. They made some lovely Autumn crowns using the different objects they had found. On their walk the children found apples growing on one of our trees and blackberries. They especially enjoyed hugging the beautiful crocheted trees!

Afternoon Nursery sat in the story telling chair outside and took turns to make up stories for each other.

The children have really enjoyed listening to the story 'The Scarecrow's Wedding' this week and by the end of the week were able to join in with the different parts.

We have a new rail outside for the children to hang up their Woodlands suits so they can stay at school every day if you wish. Please make sure they are named so they do not get muddled up.

Next week we are going to be reading the story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears.'

Our rhyme of the week is 'Little Bo Peep.'

Sunday 2 October 2016

Mark making

Nursery have had a fun week.

In P.E. we all enjoyed shaking our beanbags to the 'Beanbag Rock' song and finding different parts of our bodies to balance them on. We have been using our listening skills when moving around the hall and practising stopping when we hear the tambourine.

We have been using our mark making skills this week by drawing pictures of our families. We also looked carefully at ourselves to draw our self portraits.

We were lucky to have Nick Schon, the illustrator of the Biff and Chip books, to visit us in Nursery. Morning Nursery made up a story  about Kipper falling off a building, going down a water slide and then landing on a cat. Afternoon Nursery got Kipper to meet a family of dinosaurs and make friends with the baby one. It was a lot of fun.

The children all loved going on the climbing wall and in the new tunnel when it was finally opened at the end of the week. Many were challenging themselves and taking risks on the equipment.

Next week our rhyme of the week is 'Baby Bunting'. We will be reading 'The Scarecrow's Wedding.' to link in with Harvest.

Saturday 24 September 2016

Brilliant Books!

We have had another enjoyable week in Nursery and have really enjoyed reading Each Peach Pear Plum, joining in with the phrases and trying to find the characters in the pictures. The teachers have enjoyed hearing all about our favourite books and why we like them. Thank you for sending in the fantastic photos.

We have been learning how to look after the toys and equipment in the Nursery and the outside areas. We have been learning about how to tidy away the toys and what to do in the different areas. We are looking forward to exploring them more.

The children have loved exploring the new sandpit and moving the diggers and trucks. The sand grabbers have been great for our motor control and we have enjoyed ‘digging up the road.’ Some of us have just enjoyed feeling the sand between our toes and have loved jumping up and down in it. We need more practise with putting on our socks and shoes when we have finished. Please could you practise this at home.

We loved having Kathryn Holt in telling us the story of the Lion and the Mouse and we showed some great listening skills. We helped her by doing some noises and actions.

We’ve had our first ‘Physical Friday’ using the bikes, scooters and little cars. We did really well at sharing and taking turns.

Peaches  group from Morning Nursery and the Afternoon Nursery children had their first trip to our school library for story time. They loved sitting on the comfy seats and cushions there. The morning Pears group are looking forward to their turn next week.

Next week our rhyme of the week is ‘Tommy Thumb’.

In Phonics we will be using our listening skills.

Friday 16 September 2016

Welcome to Nursery!

Welcome to Nursery and thank you for reading our blog. Every week we will post details of what we have been learning in Nursery, and what the children will be learning the following week. We will let you know about events coming up and post reminders. You are welcome to share the posts with your children and please comment on things that the children have found enjoyable that week in Nursery.

We have had a fantastic week in Nursery getting to know the children and it has been lovely to see how they have been enjoying the different areas and settling in to their new environment.

The children have enjoyed exploring the different areas both inside and outside. Morning Nursery have produced some lovely paintings, exploring what happens when they mix colours. The children have really enjoyed playing outside on the apparatus, ‘trip-trapping’ over the bridge. They have used their problem solving skills in the water tray, trying to fix different sized pipes together so that they would fit. They have learned how to use our Muddy Kitchen area.

The afternoon children have explored the reception side of the playground and loved wearing the suits to go splashing in the puddles today. They have been great musicians playing along to the Disney tunes. The children have all enjoyed playing with the purple sand indoors and now that our cover has arrived for the new sandpit outside, the children will get the chance to play in it next week.

Our favourite comment of the week; ‘This pre-school is amazing.’

The children are looking forward to wearing their new P.E. kits next week. Please remember to bring them in on Monday.

We are going to start our Brilliant Books topic by reading Each Peach Pear Plum and Kathryn Holt is coming in to do some story telling.

Our rhyme of the week next week will be ‘Jack and Jill.’

There is a 'New to...' meeting on Tuesday 20th September and for Nursery this starts at 8pm. Please come and found out a bit more about Nursery and to meet the Early Years Foundation Stage team.

Sunday 10 July 2016

Butterflies

What an exciting week we have had in Nursery! Last week 10 of our caterpillars emerged from their cocoons as butterflies and at the beginning of the week we took them down to the meadow to release them. Brooke, George C, Jessica, McKenzie, Ross and Harry were all very gentle holding them and they carefully put them onto the beautiful flowers which were planted earlier in the term. Some of the butterflies quickly flew away as soon as we let them out so we waved goodbye.

We have been learning about Under the Sea this week and have been creative making fish and under the sea worlds. We have also started to think about what we want to share with you in our sharing assemblies on 21st July. We will be busy practising over the next couple of weeks.

On Monday next week we have our talent show if any of the children want to share a talent they have with the rest of the class. We will also be practising our assembly.

Please come along to our Open Evening on Monday 5-7pm to see all the fantastic things the children have been learning about this year.

Sunday 26 June 2016

Caterpillars

This week we saw a big difference in the caterpillars that had come to visit Nursery. They were no longer crawling around and had made their way to the top of the pot, curled up and spun themselves a cocoon. We were allowed to look at them but could not touch them as we have to be very careful during this important stage. Next week we are hoping to move them into the butterfly house and wait for them to appear as butterflies.

We also begun decorating our pots which can be bought at the Strawberry Fayre next weekend.

Next week we are going to be looking at the sunflowers we planted a couple of weeks ago, to see whether there have been any changes.

We will also be reading different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Our sound of the week will be 'w'. In letters and sounds we will also be continuing to play rhyming games which the children can have fun playing at home.

Friday 10 June 2016

Growing

What a busy week we have had in Nursery.

All of the children have planted a sunflower and we were very impressed with what the children knew about what the seed would need to grow. The afternoon children wanted to see whether the seed would grow with just water and no soil. Theo and George were wondering whether the seed would grow with lemon squash. George B thought it would because 'it has water in it'.

We had a fantastic time at Stockwood Park and Discovery Centre. The children were all very well behaved and listened to the adults carefully. The children went on a bug hunt and listened to a story about Neville the Squirrel. They then made bug masks. We enjoyed exploring the park, the gardens and riding on the tractor. Ross said 'I really enjoyed running around.' Pat enjoyed 'looking for the squirrel' in the big Oak tree. Thank you to all the parents who gave up their time to help.

Next week we will be learning about the life cycles of different animals. We will be having some visitors in Nursery over the next few weeks and observing how they change.

Next week our sound of the week is 'v'.

Friday 3 June 2016

Night and Day

For the last couple of weeks we have been learning about day and night and continuing with our space theme.

This week the children have been learning about the sun and why we have day and night. We also had fun playing with our shadows. The children were able to explain what made a shadow. Georgia explained 'The sun made a shadow.' George B. explained that the tree was making a shadow 'because it is blocking the light.'

This week we have been learning how to use the outdoor woodwork area safely. We have used the hammers to bang in nails. This has helped with our fine motor skills.

We were really pleased to see how well the children danced for the May King and Queen celebrations. After weeks of practising 'In and Out the Dusty Bluebells' the children performed brilliantly, remembering their steps and dancing with rhythm.

We hope you have a relaxing half term holiday.

Please remember we return to school on Tuesday 7th June as Monday is an INSET day. We are looking forward to our trip to Stockwood Park and Discovery Centre on Friday 10th June, where we will be exploring nature. We will also be looking at plant growth and planting our own seeds.

In Letters and Sounds the sound of the week will be 'v'.

Sunday 15 May 2016

Space

What a busy week we have had!

We enjoyed reading Whatever Next! and using the role play area to imagine going into space. Some of us had a picnic on the moon but we had to be careful the food didn't float away!

We also enjoyed going down to the Forest School this week. We had great fun hunting for bugs and managed to find snails, slugs, millipedes, woodlice and spiders. We were very careful to put them back where we found them or we placed them in the bug hotel. We also collected lots of natural objects to make paintbrushes next week.

Next week we are continuing our Space theme, but also looking at Night and Day. We will be exploring shadows and hoping that the sun shines for us and sorting things that happen at night and things that happen during the day. Please talk to your child about their day and night time routines.

Our rhyme of the week next week is 'Wee Willie Winkie'.

Saturday 7 May 2016

Trains, Planes and Cars

This week we have been learning about trains, planes and cars. We read the Train Ride story and looked at the different places the train travelled through. In Maths we enjoyed sorting the vehicles based on the number of wheels they have. Some of us talked about different places we have been on holiday and how we got there.

We used instruments to tap a rhythm to 'In and Out the Dusty Bluebells'.

Next week we will be having a Space theme. We are going to read the story Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy and use our imaginations to go up into space. We will also be composing our own space music.

Please remember that Forest Schools is on Wednesday next week and the children will need wellies in school. If it is hot they should also bring in a sunhat.

We look forward to seeing those of you who have signed up to do work shadowing.

Our song of the week next week is 'Zoom Zoom Zoom (We're going to the Moon)'.

Friday 29 April 2016

Redbourn - Our World

This week we have been learning about Redbourn, our homes and the village.

We have drawn pictures of our homes and written about them. We have shared what our homes are like with our friends and we have enjoyed hearing all about what the children's bedrooms are like.

Our village walk to the Post Office went very well. Thank you to all those adults who helped. We really appreciate it.

We were very excited this week as we were able to go and look at the Living Eggs in the Learning Pod between the reception classes.  We made predictions on when we thought the first egg would hatch and some of us were lucky to be there as an egg hatched. Lots of the children were keen to hold the chicks which we are hoping to do next week.

Please take a look at our Nursery Newsletter and Home Learning Ideas which you should have received this week. If the children do a piece of Home Learning please bring it in or provide a photograph as we would love to include these in their Learning Journeys.

Work shadowing begins the week beginning 9th May. Sign up sheets are now available outside Nursery if you would like to come and see what your child gets up to during their Nursery session.

Next week we will be learning about trains, cars and planes and thinking about other parts of the country and the world the children have visited. If your child would like to bring in a photograph of somewhere else they have been we would love them to share it with us and the rest of their group.

In Maths we will be comparing numbers of objects such as wheels on different vehicles and talking about when they are the same or more or less.

In Phonics we will be revisiting sounds that have already been introduced and starting to listen carefully to sounds in words by segmenting and blending.

Our song of the week is In and Out the Dusty Bluebells.

Wednesday 20 April 2016

Welcome back

Welcome back to Nursery and we hope you all had a lovely Easter break.

This week we have begun thinking about our new topic 'Wonders of the World' by reading the Creation Story and thinking about all the wonders in our world. The children have been drawing pictures and attempting to write about them, as well as making their own worlds by painting and using collage.

The children are enjoying using the new Post Office role play. We're sure many of you have been receiving lots of letters this week. It has been lovely seeing the children so excited about their mark making. We are going on a Village Walk next Thursday 28th April and hoping to include a visit to the Post Office. If you are able to help please let a member of the team know. Thank you to those who have already offered to help.

Our outdoor area is developing and we have now got our den making area up and running. The children are experimenting with building and creating their own dens.

We have also moved some of the groups around to encourage the children to mix with other peers and to get them used to different staff members. We hope the children have enjoyed changing groups, but if you have any concerns please speak to one of the team.

Next week we will be learning about Redbourn and the children will be encouraged to talk about what they already know about Redbourn, their house, street and family. We will also be asking them to think of questions about what they would like to find out about Redbourn - who, what, when, how.

Our sound of the week this week was 'l'. Next week it is 'ss'.

Our rhyme of the week is 'Hey Diddle Diddle.'

Saturday 26 March 2016

Easter

We have been learning about the Easter story this week and we have been busy making our Easter cards. We hope you like them. The children have tried hard to challenge themselves by writing their names independently, and some have copied other words too. They have been feeling very proud of themselves.

We have developed our outside area by moving the instruments from the reception playground to outside Nursery. The children helped to set up a stage using the blocks and enjoyed performing to the music we played outside. This will be our new creative area and we are looking forward to developing it further with the children's help.

Next week we will continuing learning about Easter and comparing it with the Hindu festival of Colours; Holi. Paints at the ready! We will also be using the computer and using the mouse to create Holi inspired pictures.

Please could you talk to your children about the Easter weekend so that they can share something they have done with the rest of the group.

We hope you enjoy the Easter weekend and we look forward to hearing all about it next week.

Happy Easter!!

Thursday 17 March 2016

Inside Out

We have finally got the blog up and running again after some changes in usernames and passwords!! We will try to keep you updated with weekly blogs on what the children have been doing and what they will be learning the following week.

This half term we have been looking at creatures that live inside and out. This started with a dinosaur hunt in the outdoor area. The children loved looking for dinosaurs and were very excited to find a baby one inside a dinosaur egg!

We enjoyed retelling story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar during book week. We counted fruits and made our butterfly Mother's Day cards. Professor Pango Mango made us laugh with his funny rhymes and we were lucky enough to have the Year 6 children come and read to us.

We have been looking at creatures in shells the last couple of weeks. We had some snail visitors and looked at them eating homemade lettuce soup. Some of us were even brave enough to hold them.

This week we read Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson and listened for rhyming words and were told the story of How Tortoise Got his Broken shell. We have been challenging the children to use 2d shapes to mend the shell. We have also been mixing colours.

Next week we will be learning about Easter by listening to the Easter Story. We will also be discussing what the children do to celebrate Easter. Please talk to your child about what they will be doing Easter weekend so that they can get involved in discussions.

We will be singing 'Hot Cross Buns' and revising the letter sounds we have been introduced to - s, a, t, p, i, n, m, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, b, f. The children will practise recognising these and will be thinking of words which start with these sounds.
